Advice: Listen for specific information

Listening advice: How to Listen for Specific information?

The first step to better listening is to listen to the specific information. In the first section of the IELTS exams, you may find form-filling exercise which asks for specific information like date, numbers, subjects, etc.

When answering these type of exercise, keep these points in mind.

  • The answers always follow the sequence.
  • Pay attention to the speakers, who is information-seeker and who is information provider. Usually, you will find that the conversation is between a man and a woman. This makes it easier for you to follow.
  • Underline the keywords.
  • What information is required in a given question?
  • Listen to the distracters. What differentiates it from the real answer? Often, the answer is spoken later but there is no such rule. The answer may come first and then the distracter.
  • More specifically, if possible identify whether a noun, adjective or adverb is required in a given gap. This will help you if the question is paraphrased and will also help you in guessing any answer.

Now as a simple exercise, provide what kind of data is expected (noun, adjective, adverb, place, time, number) in the following questions.

Company Adviser’s Name: (1)…………. Willis

Company’s Name: (2)……………………shops

Location:                       (3)……………Mall,

Client previously asked about catalog for: (4)…………………..

Mr. Willis’s Phone Number: (5) ……………………..

Following that, check your guess.
